Lea Michele Gives ‘Drivers License’ a ‘Glee’-Worthy Kellyoke Makeover

Gleeks, get ready, because Rachel Berry has finally obtained her “Drivers License.”

Yes, Lea Michele sang a beautiful cover of Olivia Rodrigo’s groundbreaking first song on The Kelly Clarkson Show on Thursday (May 22).

The star sang the eight-week No. 1 Billboard Hot 100 hit while wearing a ruched ivory jumpsuit and channeling her famous Glee character’s sense of melodrama. She sang, “You’re probably with that blonde girl who always made me doubt/She’s so much older than me, she’s everything I’m insecure about/Yeah, today I drove through the suburbs, because how could I ever love someone else?” (Of course, if this were the early days of Glee, Michele-as-Berry would be talking about Quinn Fabray played by Dianna Agron, right?)

When the show was over, Michele told host Kelly Clarkson that her cover was actually based on her famous TV character.

She told them, “Right now I’m on tour and singing a lot of songs from Glee and Broadway.” “But I have this part of my show where I ask, ‘What would Rachel Berry be singing if Glee were on TV right now?'” I thought, “That sounds so much like a Rachel Berry song” as soon as I heard “Drivers License.”

Michele hinted that she has “something exciting coming up” after saying that the cast of Glee sang “over 800 songs” over the course of the show’s six seasons on Fox. She didn’t give fans any more information than that she’d be releasing the secret project “very soon.”

Blake Shelton, Lizzo, Sierra Hull, Ledisi, and the group of SMASH are some other famous people who have recently performed “Cameo-oke” numbers on The Kelly Clarkson Show.

On “Drivers License,” Michele drives through the suburbs. Watch her do it below.
